Speed up your computer

icon_speedometerAs you may have realised, most computers seem much slower then they were new. This is normally due to the fact that your computer is busy sending marketing information instead of obeying your orders and clicks.

The most popular way to make money on the Internet today is by selling user browsing information. Such information is collected from your computer by the use of cookies, browser tool bars and all sorts of other clever ways.

Such a trend becomes a nuisance when your computer is the one being used to collect and send such information, slowing your computer down and doing so without your permission!

Following is a list of things you can do to speed up your computer.

Reduce Internet Explorer History

One of the main things which slow down computers is the extra large history data collected by Internet explorer. To reduce this history, you need to

  1. go to control panel, "Internet Options", and
  2. look for the history section and click settings
  3. Reduce the amount to 50. Press OK when finished

you should notice a general improvement in PC speed.

Keep your desktop "lite"

Most windows operating systems cannot handle too many files on your desktop (Ironically due to it trying to make them really accessible). So keep the desktop "lite", and do not have big folders full of photos or other files. Just keep those things you are working on today, or this week. If you do keep a lot of things on your desktop, you should notice a big difference once you free up some space here.

Remove Flash Cookies (Windows and MAC)

We recently came across this TIP and is proving quite a saviour in speed performance issue.

Sites store information tags on your computer called cookies, these cookies are then used by other programs to collect information about were you've been.

Ideally you remove these cookies from your browser as well as from FLASH.

removeFlashCookies

To remove cookies from your currently installed Flash,

  • Click on the following link which will take you to page looking like the image here on the side.
  • Once loaded, click on the button called Delete All Sites. This button deletes cookies from all the mentioned sites. Don't worry, you never need these things yourself.
  • You can also reduce the space required by moving it to the left.

We appreciate that it seems weird to have to go to another website but that is how one can access the settings the currently installed flash.

Remove any Browser Toolbars

To further speed up your browsing, we recommend removing all of your browser tool bars as these also collect information about your browsing habits. These toolbars are those extra buttons you normally see on your Internet Explorer or other browser.

To remove such toolbars from IE (Internet Explorer)

  1. Close any open IE windows.
  2. Click the Windows “Start” button in the lower left-hand corner of your screen.
  3. Select “Control Panel” from the “Settings” menu.
  4. Double-click on “Add/Remove Programs”.
  5. Scroll down and click on the unwanted toolbar entry. A list of possible toolbars is included here to the right.
  6. Click on “Change/Remove.”

List of Possible Toolbars

  • “Google Toolbar for IE”
  • “Yahoo! Toolbar”.
  • Symantec Toolbar
We will keep adding this list as we go along, in the meantime, look for any program which has the Toolbar word in its name.

Get rid of your spy-ware

One major issue which seems to slow down most computers we peak at is spy-ware. To get rid of spy-ware all you need to do is to scan your computer with an Anti Spy-Ware tool which is different from Anti-Virus.

We currently recommend:

Malware Bytes Free Version

Clean your computer from extra files and Processes

Computers don't really slow down, but they just get busier and busier running multiple programs and up-keeping extra files. CCleaner is a great tool to scan your computer for extra files and processes.

Warning: Read/google about each thing/program you remove to make sure you don't remove computer drivers.

Download CCleaner and give it a run. We highly recommend this tool for advanced users.

Overheating Computer

If your computer still seems slow after following all the above recommendations, you may want to make sure that your PC is not overheating. This is only necessary for PCs that are more then 1 year old or that operate in dusty environments (Or on fitted carpets).

If you recently noticed your computer making more Fan noise then usual, this is a sign that your PC is overheating.

You can also be more scientific about it by downloading and installing Core Temp which will show you the exact temperature of your processor/s. Be careful not to install the suggested Browser Tool bar as you'll end up back to square one.
